Tests of those affected

In my project, I was supported by the Bavarian Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired in Upper Palatinate, the Regensburg Institute for the Blind and the East Bavarian University of Applied Sciences in Regensburg. Two people affected tested the GUIDE-Walk in use in traffic and then provided feedback in an interview. These insights have been extremely helpful to me in improving the device and have contributed significantly to the growth of the device in its functionality.

"My name is Dr. Rainer Schliermann, I am a professor at the East Bavarian University of Applied Sciences in Regensburg and I represent the subjects of education and social science research methods.

Everyone with impaired vision has considerable problems with orientation in unfamiliar environments. That means that navigation is more effort because you have to learn everything. The device that we tested provides help in this matter: especially in environments where you not necessarily know the way around or if something suddenly gets in the way that you didn't expect, it is, of course, an advantage if it gives reliable feedback."

"I am Rudolf Pichlmeier, the head of the Upper Palatinate district group of the Bavarian Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired here in Regensburg. We are a contact point for blind and visually impaired people with over 700 members, Bavaria-wide around 8000.

First of all, I need more time to listen, I have to concentrate a lot more on my surroundings because I can't see it. The traffic is difficult because people are sometimes in quite of a hustle and therefore, I think the device we have just tested is a very good start to help with this problem. It tells me three to five meters in advance that for example a pedestrian is coming. As an additional tool which helps me perceive my environment, it is ideal for this cause."

Interviews:

The interviews and excerpts from the recordings of the test runs have been summarized in this video. It gives interesting insights into the everyday life of visually impaired people and the challenges they have to face in road traffic (only German version):
